Let's talk about which technology tools can help you as a teacher to stay organized,

help your students, and keep your sanity! 

1.  Why is it important to learn about different technology tools when they are constantly changing?

Because each tool performs a different function and one is often built upon the next.  So when once you had to learn how to work a laptop and how to add on a web cam, now you can find a laptop with a web cam built in.  If you weren't familiar with video conferencing using a web cam before, chances are that feature on a laptop won't make much sense to you.  When using tools such as computers, mobile devices, peripherals and data storage devices, its best to learn them as they become available because some classrooms are equipped with all of these devices and some are equipped with just a few.  You must be prepared on how to use these tools before you can begin instructing your students.

2.  Most desktop computers do the same things as mobile devices, so why do teachers need to use both?

True, they may serve the same basic functions, but as I have learned, they do not share the same uses.  You can use your desktop to check your email, but if your on a field trip or just away from  your classroom, it's great to be able to check your school email on the go so that you can stay on top of communication from the school system as well as parents.  A teacher can connect to You Tube to play music for her class or pop in a CD in the hard drive, but it makes much more sense to store these on things such as Ipods or MP3 players so that they're ready to play when you are.  No more searching online at the last minute or trying to make sure everyone can hear through the computer speakers.  Just plug it into your radio and you're ready to go!  However, desktops tend to have much more storage for back up purposes of assessments and grades.  You can use a mobile device for some convenience purposes, but it makes much more sense to store large amounts of data on the desktop.

3.  How can the cost of digital devices be justified when the functions they perform are often limited in number and scope?

Because they are convenient for those busy, on the go teachers.   They provide a variety of information and resources for teachers to use.  Most are light-weight and portable from classroom to home and most allow students to access a world that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to.  Morrison & Lowther (2010) insist that digital devices allow students to "gather, evaluate, and use information" (p. 59) to become 21st Century learners.
